Why Exercise Can be the Answer to Holiday Stress and Blues
Holiday Stress?
Maybe you are having some holiday blues or maybe the stress and anxiety of getting through the holidays has put you in an emotional rut.
If you feel like you have not been yourself lately…this is for you.
It is a busy time and there are many people who suffer because the feelings that come up around this time are not always positive.
You may have already heard this, but I want to remind you how much exercise can help what is going on for you emotionally.
As a Life Coach, I am a firm believer in learning how to manage your mind. But as a Fitness Trainer as well, I know the benefits of what a good sweat session can do for your soul.
Exercise can be the Answer
When you are moving your body, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, and elevating your heart rate, chemical signals called endorphins are produced in the brain. These chemicals result in an increased feeling of well being.
Endorphins can be boosted through not just exercise, but also sex, massage, acupuncture and a variety of other ways. For the sake of this article, we will stick to just exercise.
No one can argue that exercise produces endorphins which help improve our mood and put us in a positive state of mind. You’ve probably heard the term “runners high.” That is exactly what I am talking about. Our mood is literally elevated.
There is nothing better than a heart pumping activity to break the cycle of negative emotion. When you are feeling down, get some exercise. Even if it is a slow paced run or walk, you will feel so much better. If you can, do it outside for added benefit.
I lift weights to change my body composition. But I do cardio to decrease stress and lift my mental state. I promise, it can make you feel so much better.
Consider being proactive about moving your body, especially during the holidays or periods of high pressure. Don’t skip your workout because you think you have too much on your plate. During these periods, it is more important than ever.
Endorphins and Emotions
Exercise has been shown to lower depression and anxiety and increase self-esteem and confidence. Who doesn’t want a little bit more of the later?
Think about how much of an increase we saw in depression rates during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Not only were people suffering from loneliness and isolation but many were stuck inside their homes completely sedentary. I guarantee, those who made a point to exercise during that time were in a much better place mentally.
If you have any of the following symptoms, your body may not be producing enough endorphins:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Body aches and pains
- Addiction
- Sleep issues
- Impulsive actions
I recognize that exercise is not the only answer for people who genuinely suffer with mental health issues. Many individuals need professional help. But, it is a great relief for individuals who want to be in a better place.
I don’t know your story. Perhaps there is some grief involved which makes the holiday season a bit more challenging. Sometimes that is part of the human experience. And you know what? It is ok. I don’t want you to stuff your emotions in a box. But it can be nice to sometimes have a release.
The endorphins produced during exercise help us sleep better, manage PMS, menopause and so much more. Working out increases our energy levels, concentration and alertness. If we can use exercise as a tool to improve our mood and general well being, I say, give it a shot.
